Tuesday, August 31, 2004 at 09:48AM I don’t have much to say about the first night of the RNC other than that I switched over to The Amityville Horror because I thought it would be less frightening. Also, I understand that the war in Iraq and homeland security and all that stuff is going to make up like 87 percent of the platform, but man, does it ever seem exploitative to parade out widows of people who died on 9/11 (And, by the way, why widows? Couldn’t they have found some widowers as well? I bet crying women are more sympathetic than men.) Exploitative and cheap. I will say, however, that the convention last night had one of the greatest moments ever: John McCain totally strolled out to the theme from Raiders of The Lost Ark. That was fucking awesome. I know I’m a democrat and all, but I really like Senator McCain, and I feel for him. Every time that man endorses the President, he looks like he’s swallowing a little bit of vomit. It’s such a shame that the GOP has been overrun by the right of their party, don’t you think, I mean, they are so far from what they used to stand for, which I don’t think was a bad thing, necessarily. Hey, I have a great idea—let’s spend 87 billion on the war effort! What? Isn’t fiscal responsibility part of the party’s philosophy? Oh, and what about a federal law banning same-sex marriages, that’s a great idea, because, really what we want is a larger, more powerful Federal Government.
I don’t know. I am confused. And if we’re keeping score, Republicans can’t dance either.

Really?
When has that ever happened to a political party?
What I noticed wrt to the RNC was that all the press photos on CNN, NYT, etc, had folks in cowboy hats in them. That seemed indicative of something, but what I could not venture in this comment space.
and you're right! tons and tons of cowboy hats. and women in those shirts with the limp bow-tie.
